LAWN AND GARDEN STARTUP TIPS

January:

Dormant spray fruit trees and shrubs for overwintering insects and disease. Every three weeks until bud break.

Clean up any winter debris.

February:

Prune fruit trees and continue dormant spraying.

Plant sweet pea seeds around President’s day.

Purchase seeds now for best selection and availability and make sure you have everything needed to start seeds.
Start tomato, pepper, and eggplant seeds indoors toward end of month.

Start spraying deer repellent to keep tender plants and shoots from being eaten.

Moles are on the move, use traps, poison, or repellents now.

March:
Put out mason bees and nesting material about a week before fruit trees start blooming.

Start fertilizing lawns, fruit trees, shrubs and garden beds.

Put lime and moss killer on lawns mid-month in preparation for seeding/over-seeding in April.

Start prepping garden beds (if soil is dry enough to work).

Some seeds such as lettuce, spinach, kale, and peas can be planted in a cold frame or   garden beds with protection from frosts.
